Indonesia - stop 4

Indonesia

Star rating 3.5

With over 17000 Islands and a population over 117 million, Indonesia is a mix of crowded bustling cities and deserted desert Islands. Offering everything from tourist traps like Bali to remote quite Islands it probably has something for everybody.

Indonesia has a long history of trade (spices) Colonial oppression and occupation, finally gaining it’s Independence from the Dutch in 1949.

A mostly Islamic country with a mix of Hinduism, Buddhism and some ancient local religions blended into it.

The LGBT scene is there and developing, but still quite and a little hidden, although we did get good information and advice from a number of people and organizations. While holding hands for women is OK (as it is in most of Asia) Public displays of affection (pda) beyond that are not really accepted.

Bali is an Indonesian island located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. The best place to stay is in Seminyak, with its more open LGDT scene and plenty of gay-owned or gay-friendly bars, and nightclubs. There is also a gay cruising area north of Petitenget beach.

We flew into Bali, still feeling battered and bruised as the maid thought I needed some TLC (tender loving care). We checked into the resort for a week of pampering, mud baths, massages and hot spring spas. Pure luxury I must say, it was pretty obvious we are a lesbian couple, but no one blinked an eye and every one was super friendly.

The morning yoga classes they had were especially welcome and the maid joined them, which was great.

After what happened in Australia the maid is teaching me Capoeira, it is interesting, but I hope never to be in that kind of situation again to be honest.
